Its major part has been reclaimed from Lake Vembanad which increased its area considerably. In the year of 1878, this marshy area around Vembanad Lake was replaced by coconut plantations. Popularly known as “the rice bowl of Kerala”, Kumarakom is located around Kuttanad region and at a distance of 14 km from Kottyam.

The mesmerizing backwaters presenting secluded as well as relaxed time on the houseboats are the major attraction of Kumarakom tour. The backwater presents rich flora and fauna for to live with. Exclusive kumarakom karimeen, tiger prawns, crabs, prawns, etc. can easily be spotted here. For reaching Kumarakom, one go via rail as well as via road and if interested opt for waterways. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport which is about 85 Km away from Kumarakom. If coming via train you can reach the nearest railhead Kottayam is just 16 Km away from the destination. For traveling via water, you can take ferry services to Alleppey and from there go to Kumarakom via road.
