Beauty of backwaters is not unknown to many. Kumarakom is the place popular for its backwaters. Its refreshing surroundings, lush greenery and serene lake make Kumarakom a place worth visiting at least once. Situated in Kottayam District, Kumarakom has its western, southern and part of northern boundary as Lake Vembanad which takes the beauty of the place to a different level altogether.

The current area of Kumarakom is consisted of reclaimed land, lots of canals, Meenachil River and Lake Vembanad. Its major part has been reclaimed from Lake Vembanad which increased its area considerably. In the year of 1878, this marshy area around Vembanad Lake was replaced by coconut plantations. Popularly known as “the rice bowl of Kerala”, Kumarakom is located around Kuttanad region and at a distance of 14 km from Kottyam.

The mesmerizing backwaters presenting secluded as well as relaxed time on the houseboats are the major attraction of Kumarakom tour. The backwater presents rich flora and fauna for to live with. Exclusive kumarakom karimeen, tiger prawns, crabs, prawns, etc. can easily be spotted here. One of the important parts of Aqua Tourism, the Vembanad Lake captivates you with its beauty as well as offer wide range of options to keep you engaged. Talking about water sports, the boar races at Kumarakom are exceptionally exciting with tons of snake boats rowing in unison.

Along with the famous Vembanad Lake and rich aqua life, Kumarakom presents some exciting moments to bird watchers too. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is spread across an area of almost 101 acres, boats of wide variety of avian fauna.

For reaching Kumarakom, one go via rail as well as via road and if interested opt for waterways. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport which is about 85 Km away from Kumarakom. If coming via train you can reach the nearest railhead Kottayam is just 16 Km away from the destination. For traveling via water, you can take ferry services to Alleppey and from there go to Kumarakom via road.
